Question and Answer

Yorktown junior Nick Mariano

Q. This is the proverbial, obvious question but what does it mean to win the Murphy Cup?

A. It’s probably the best feeling in the world. Mr. Murph created Yorktown lacrosse for us and just winning for him means the world to me. I met him once in my life and it just felt great meeting him.

Lakeland/Panas senior Chris Monteferante

Q. You played great in the first half. What were you doing right?

A. We played our game the whole game through. We didn’t really change much. In the second half they cut down on their mistakes and it showed. They are a very good team. Once they cut down on their mistakes, it was hard for us to generate some of those transition opportunities.

Yorktown coach Dave Marr

Q. What did you talk about at halftime that helped propel your team to the 14-10 victory?

A. Coach Lodey (Adam Lodewick) and Coach Carney (Sean Carney) took care of halftime. They stressed the fact that we weren’t playing very well in the first half in the sense that we weren’t moving our feet, we weren’t getting groundballs, we were getting outhustled and we needed to pick it up. In the second half we finally played hard throughout and did a good job.

Lakeland/Panas coach Jim Lindsay

Q. The first half you had things going for you, what did you think that you did right in that half?

A. We were playing hard. All of our kids were playing hard. We were playing with a lot of emotion. We were running hard when we had the ball on our stick. We were finishing shots which is something that we struggled with a little bit earlier in the year. That was it.

To their credit they weathered that storm and were only down 8-6. That score could’ve been a little bit more but we just were playing hard in the first half and that was the difference.
