Indian Point Unit 2 Shut Down Wednesday

A company spokeswoman said there was no effect on the public or worker's health and safety.

Buchanan, NY — Entergy, the owner and operator of the Indian Point nuclear plant, said Unit 2 shut down Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for the company said in a release that the unit automatically and safely shut down around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The shutdown occurred at the same time technicians were testing electrical systems that are designed to automatically shut down the reactor if needed.

The reason for the shutdown is under investigation, the spokeswoman said.

She said there was no release of radioactivity, and there was no effect on public or worker health or safety.

The equipment was said to have operated as designed and that control room operators responded as expected.

Indian Point Unit 3, which has been online for 203 continuous days, remains at full power, the spokeswoman said.
