PEEKSKILL, NY — A portion of Lower South Street is closed to traffic Monday as a result of a massive water main break on Labor day.

Most Peekskill residents were without water or had very low water pressure for hours. Since there was also no pressure in fire hydrants, neighboring communities had fire tankers on standby in case the Peekskill Fire Department needed them.

The break undermined Lower South Street, causing the roadway to collapse in a sinkhole in the 1000 block. Peekskill police warned people that access from Lower South Street was blocked.
