Martin, Talbot, McKenzie, and Rainey Endorsed

The Democratic slate for city offices got the nod from the Women's Equality Party and the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee.

The Democratic slate of Ken Martin, candidate for Mayor, and Kathleen Talbot, Vivian McKenzie, and Andre Rainey announced that they have been endorsed by the Women’s Equality Party and will appear under the party’s banner in the 2015 Peekskill elections.

The Women’s Equality Party was founded to advance a 10-point women’s equality platform in New York State. Among other issues, the 10-point plan strengthens laws in New York to require equal pay for equal work, enhances laws against sexual harassment in the workplace, and bars discrimination for family status and in housing due to domestic violence or a woman’s source of income.

“The Women’s Equality Party endorsement is a statewide stamp of approval that makes clear to voters that the candidates running on that line represent the best choice to ensure that the agenda of women and girls are advanced from Bethpage to Buffalo,” said Christine Quinn, former NYC Council Speaker and leader in the Women’s Equality Party. “In Peekskill, we know the greatest opportunity to advance an agenda of behalf of women and girls is to put Ken Martin in the mayor’s office. On the Common Council, the only choices are Kathie Talbot, Vivian McKenzie, and Andre Rainey.”

“I couldn’t be more pleased to have the support of both the Women’s Equality Party and the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee,” said City Councilwoman Kathleen Talbot. “In 2015, a woman in Peekskill shouldn’t have to fight to make sure she gets equal pay for equal work or is protected in the workplace, but unfortunately we have a long way to go.”

“In Peekskill, women represent 52% of all residents and 25% of all homes are headed by single women,” said Councilwoman Vivian McKenzie. “That means that women’s issues are Peekskill issues, and equal pay for equal work has a direct financial impact on a significant number of households in this city.”

In addition to the endorsement from the Women’s Equality Party, the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee (ERLC) endorsed Kathie Talbot and Vivian McKenzie for re-election. The ERLC’s mission is to build a new generation of pro-choice women candidates, informed voters, and political activists in New York State. Their work is inspired by Eleanor Roosevelt’s example of leadership and her commitment to promoting women in politics and government. ERLC has awarded over $1 million in campaign grants to over 1,350 candidates since 2001.
