In the mid-late 1990s, one of my favorite experiences was covering the Peekskill Roller Hockey League at Depew Park for the old Peekskill Herald (which eventually became the Peekskill-Cortlandt Herald).

PRHL founder Sam Oitice ran that league with as much passion as anyone I have ever seen run a league and considering how many sports leagues I have witnessed throughout the years, that says something. Unfortunately, he left us way too soon as he died while saving lives as a proud New York City fireman during 9/11.

His wife Jean Oitice was his right hand in running it. She has had her own battles through the years, including one with breast cancer, but she is as tough as they come and overcame that, as we all knew she would.

Her daughter Jess (who played in the league along with her brother John, who was one of the league’s elite players), took part in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk in New York City last year in her mom’s honor and encouraged her mom to form a team for the walk this year.

That team is Team Mamma's Dukes, which includes Jean and Jess, Jen Hadden, Mary Frankum, Lindsey Frankum and Dee Brown, who when we were in high school was the older sister I never had as I was best friends with her brother Ed, my sports buddy back then.

This year the walk is a 2-day, 39-mile walk in New York City on October 20-21. Anyone who wants to, can go to the Avon site at www.Avonwalk.org and donate to Team Mamma’s Dukes.

Before then, the wonderful ladies of this squad are having a fund raiser at Jean Oitice’s house on Aug. 4 at 269 Lafayette Street in Cortlandt Manor. All funds will go to the Avon Breast Cancer Walk.

The below is the schedule for the day. Those that can make it check it out, it should be a great time.
