Giglio Games Set: Peekskill-Cortlandt Daily Sports Digest Feb. 1

Welcome to Patch's daily snapshot of sports in Peekskill and Cortlandt.

Giglio Games

For the winter sports season or even for the entire scholastic year, there may not be a bigger day for the than the Vincent and Terry Giglio Memorial Scholarship Games, which pit sister schools Lakeland and Walter Panas against each other in an all-day basketball event.

This year’s games will be at Panas (the site alternates between there and Lakeland each year) on Saturday, Feb. 4. The following is the schedule: 9 a.m. girls freshmen game; 11 a.m. boys freshmen game; 1 p.m. girls JV game; 3 p.m. boys JV game; 5 p.m. girls varsity game; and 7 p.m. boys varsity game.

The games, which started in 1991, are named after Vincent and Terry Giglio. Vincent was a teacher at Lakeland High School for 26 years as well as the Lakeland football coach.

He later became the Director of Health, Athletics and Physical Education for the Lakeland School District.

He and his wife, Terry, were killed in an automobile accident on Feb. 18, 1990. The Vincent and Terry Giglio Memorial Scholarship fund was created in their memory and is given to a Lakeland and Panas student every year.

Wrestling divisionals

The road to a sectional title starts for area grapplers this Saturday, Feb. 4, as the divisionals will be held at four different high schools.

Hendrick Hudson and Peekskill will be participating in Division 4 at Mahopac and Lakeland/Panas is wrestling in Division 2 at Arlington.
