Peekskill High School Inducts 53 Students into Honor Societies
Peekskill High School recently held an Induction Ceremony for their newest members of three honor societies: the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and the New York State Mathematics Honor Society.
Peekskill High School recently held an Induction Ceremony for their newest members of three honor societies. 53 students in total were inducted into the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and the New York State Mathematics Honor Society.
This year 21 new members were inducted to the Peekskill Chapter of the National Honor Society, which is the nation’s premier organization. Selection for membership is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student.
The high school also had a record number of Mu Alpha Thetans this year. The 13 students inducted attained mastery scores on each of the three regents exams in mathematics. Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society and features over 75,000 student members in more than 1,500 schools. Inductees are required to carry a cumulative average of 85 in mathematics to qualify.

“This is quite an accomplishment, and speaks to the quality of our mathematics programs not only at Peekskill High School, but all of our district schools,” said PHS teacher and Honor Society advisor, Merritt Brown. “These students will be on path for the Advanced Regents Diploma with honors, personally I feel that they have accomplished the most difficult part of this distinction.”
The New York State Mathematics Honor Society also saw 20 new inductees from Peekskill High School. For selection into this society, a student must demonstrate academic excellence in the area of math by achieving a mastery score on either Integrated Algebra or Geometry Regents exams, as well as demonstrating the ideals of character, leadership, and service.

Over the past year, PHS students of all three honor societies have gone above and beyond each organization’s academic requirements to prove themselves as outstanding community members by participating in events such as local service projects, fundraising, and tutoring. Many also competed in academic competitions such as the Westchester Interscholastic Math League, the American Math Competition, and the Westchester Academic Challenge of Knowledge Organization as well.
“Congratulations to our students, but also to our teachers and administrators who provide the vehicle for these goals to be reached,” Brown said. “We have had success with the 2005 curriculum standards and look forward to the challenge of attaining the same results or better according to the new Core Curriculum Learning Standards.”
