Peekskill Middle School recently held its second Triathlon for both students and staff. Students from every grade swam, biked and ran, each child hoping to get the three tasks completed in a shorter amount of time than their peers.
The triathlon was organized by PKMS Physical Education Teacher Jonathan Iasillo, who says his own interest in triathlons is what inspired him to bring the competition to the middle school.
“As a fan and participant of triathlons, I thought it would be cool to host one here at Peekskill,” Iasillo said. “I wanted to connect what our students were doing in Phys. Ed. class to what they were doing outside of school.”

To make the competition fair, the distance requirements for the swimming and running portions of the race were adjusted according to students’ grade levels. Eighth grader Justin Hahn took first place overall by completing the course in a record breaking 14 minutes.
The competition boasted 12 student participants, which is double the amount that joined the event last year, and PKMS Principal Dr. David Fine represented the school as the sole staff participant this year.

After completing the course, students were met at the finish line with waters, bananas and ice cream sandwiches. First place medals were awarded to the winners of each age division and a participation medal was presented to all students that took part in the triathlon.
“I think everyone did great out there today,” Iasillo said. “It’s nice to see that there’s a lot of enjoyment the kids seem to get out of this and that they have an appreciation for the level of fitness it requires.”
