PEEKSKILL, NY — With just under a year under his belt, Dr. David Mauricio has launched a parent survey about the Peekskill district. The deadline for answering it is May 24.

Actually the survey is a mandate from the New York State Education Department. It's called the Diagnostic Tool for School and District Effectiveness and it's required for schools and districts that need improvement and are targeted for comprehensive support. Still, Dr. Mauricio points out, it is also an opportunity.

"We see it as the start of an ongoing conversation about how we can provide high-quality educational opportunities for every student, every day," he said in a letter on the district website.

The survey launched Monday. Its questions address everything from leadership and capacity, school leader practices and decisions, curriculum development and support, teacher practices and decisions, to student social and emotional developmental health and family and community engagement.

It's being run by research and communications firm K12 Insight. All survey responses are confidential. K12Insight’s final reports will share only the overall results, not individual responses or comments.

"We are always striving to provide our students with a foundation that enables them to achieve beyond what they can imagine. It is important work, and your involvement is critical. Only with your voice can we be confident that we are making the best decisions for our schools and your children," Dr. Mauricio said.

If you don’t have easy access to the Internet, the district will provide computer access. Call the school, stop by the main office, or send a note with your child if you would like to request computer access. Computer access is also available at the Parent Center located at 980 Pemart Ave. Call (914) 739-0682 ext. 7309 to schedule an appointment to take this survey at the Parent Center.

Paper copies of the survey are also available upon request. The survey is available to take in either English or Spanish.

You have through May 24, to share your feedback.
