Peekskill Starts Its Own Repair Café
Tools, materials, and free expert help at Peekskill's first Repair Cafe for everything from furniture to toys

From Peekskill City Hall
Repair Cafés are free meeting places and they’re all about repairing things together. At the Peekskill Repair Café, you’ll find tools and materials to help you make any repairs you need on clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, jewelry, appliances, toys, etc. You'll also find expert volunteers, with repair skills in all kinds of fields. Visitors bring their broken items from home. The Repair Café teaches people to see their possessions in a new light, and to, once again, appreciate their value. This is essential to kindle people’s enthusiasm for a sustainable society.

The Repair Café concept arose in the Netherlands and was formulated by Martine Postma. Since 2007, Maria has been striving for sustainability at a local level in many ways. Her special focus has always been to decrease the amount of waste we produce as a society. In 2010, she started the Repair Café Foundation (see Repaircafe.org). This foundation provides support to local groups around the world wishing to start their own Repair Café. The foundation also supports the Repair Café in Peekskill.
Repair Café Foundation aims to a) reintroduce the art of repairing to the modern, local communities; b) retain and spread repair knowledge and skills; and c) to promote social cohesion by bringing together neighbors from very different backgrounds and motives in a setting of inspiring and accessible meetings. To date, repair café events are held in 18 Hudson Valley locations (see repaircafehv.org), each independently organized by members of the community.
