Probe of Peekskill Girls Basketball Fracas in Orangeburg Continues

Consequences are being considered not only for the brawlers but for next season, parental involvement and the athletic program as a whole.

PEEKSKILL, NT — In the wake of the brawl among players and parents after the Peekskill girls basketball team lost to Tappan Zee High School in the playoffs, district officials have been investigating the incident to make decisions about consequences.

Dr. David Fine, the superintendent of the school district, issued this statement:

To follow up on the incident that occurred at the Peekskill vs. Tappan Zee basketball game on February 18, the Peekskill City School District would like the public to be aware that we have been working diligently to conduct an in-depth investigation since this event took place.
This is a very complicated situation with various layers of accountability which we are mindfully and respectfully addressing. Our discussions took many hours as we analyzed all levels of this incident. Conversation began Saturday evening and continued throughout the week. The young ladies involved in this matter are good kids with bright futures who made bad decisions in a single moment.

Unfortunately, their individual actions at Saturday night’s game, regardless if it was minor or major, resulted in the escalation of an unsafe environment that evening. Our students, and those that come out to support our Peekskill schools, are ambassadors for our amazing city and we expect that they, at all- times, act with poise and respect.
Those that were involved in the event are being held accountable as it relates to our District’s policies and Code of Conduct. Additional discussions will take place next week regarding our 2017-2018 season, parental involvement and our athletic program.
