Season in Review: Hen Hud Boys Lacrosse

Sectional win against Greeley makes season a success

Number 9 Hendrick Hudson’s season highlight was a 7-6 overtime playoff triumph on junior Phil Siegel’s goal at No. 8 Horace Greeley in the opening round of Section 1 Class B Tournament.

“It was a great win,” Hen Hud senior defenseman A.J. Small said. “We were down pretty much the whole game before we came back in the fourth quarter to tie it up. Then to win it a minute into overtime and go on to play Somers again and have a chance, even though we lost, 15-7,  just to get there (the quarterfinals) was big.”

Leading the Sailors (7-11) into the sectionals were All-Section honorees, Small, senior attackman Kyle Fanning and sophomore midfielder and face-off machine Matt Ledwin.

Small and Fanning will each play lacrosse at Nazareth College next year.

“I was looking at other colleges like Ithaca and Union but Nazareth had what I wanted education wise, physical therapy, they had a good program, they also have a good lacrosse program so I thought that would be a perfect fit,” Small said. “Somehow me and Kyle were both recruited by them, so it worked out well. We are best friends.”

Fanning was the quarterback of the Sailors’ offense while Ledwin was as dominant a face-off guy as there was in Section 1.

Earning All-Section honorable mention honors was sophomore midfielder Kevin McDermott and senior attackman Mike Bertoline.

McDermott showed his offensive prowess in his first varsity game with three goals at Wantagh. Bertoline, a shifty player, who is going to play at Herkimer County Community College next season, could pile up the goals and shoot it either righty or lefty.

Next year Hen Hud is going from Class B to C, where it should be one of the favorite’s to win the sectional crown.

“The team is losing just five seniors and one got hurt,” Small said. “Defensively, they still have Elliot Astor in goal and offensively, with McDermott and Siegel, they will have a good shot in Class C.”
