Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Peekskill Need a Small Miracle

Members of the convent are crowd-sourcing need funds for heat and repairs, and so far the response is generous.

PEEKSKILL, NY — Since the Franciscan Monastery Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Peekskill turned to social media to raise money for heat this winter, the response has been immediate and abundant.

There are 24 nuns in a convent that once held 400.

The sisters need $350,000 to replace and repair everything. They sent out a mailing and set up a donation page on YouCaring.com.

The nuns said on their fundraising site:

A 150 year-old convent has four dead boilers and a chapel that needs major heating repairs. The Sisters are elderly (105 is the oldest) and are in need of funds to have heat for the winter. We have been told NOT to turn the Chapel heat on as the floor is in danger of collapsing. Chapel repairs should be around $60,000 and the boilers around $50,000 each. Water from the back porch has leaked into our Records and Archive Rooms and the repairs for that project are $49,500.

The heating part will be quickly forthcoming. Boiler companies are offering to donate and local repair companies have pledged to do maintenance, ABC7 reported Friday night.
