Opening Day in baseball is always a special one, especially if you start the season off with a win.

That was the case for Peekskill, which overcame a two-run deficit to defeat Poughkeepsie 3-2 March 29 at Peekskill Stadium.

Nick Soto went the distance on the mound for the Red Devils as he struck out 10, walked none and scattered eight hits.

Trailing 2-0 going into its half of the fifth, Peekskill tied the game in that frame with two runs of its own. The tying run came in on Kevin Slocum's single, which drove in Roberto Hiraldo, who reached base on an error.

The Red Devils first run was scored when Tyler Britt got on base with a one-out walk and eventually scored on an error.

Britt knocked in the game-winning run in the sixth, when his single to right field brought home Kyle Glickert, who reached base courtesy of a walk.

Panthers Roll

Peekskill's baseball squad wasn't the only local team to open in fine fashion as Walter Panas' softball squad had an Opening Day to remember of its own as it blew out visiting Haldane, the defending Section 1 Class C champion, 14-0, on March 28.

Panas was led at the plate by Morgan Bogardus, who went 3 for 4. Teammate Amanda Ragusa led the Panthers with 3 RBI with Molly Roche getting the win on the mound, allowing just one hit.
