Our suggestions on what to do this weekend and where to find local fun for the whole family.

Peekskill Celebration Columbus Weekend Carnival: A Columbus Day fair on the banks of the Hudson River

Where/When: , Peekskill; Thur – Mon., Oct. 6-10, (see complete schedule below for times)

Why go: Spend your Columbus Day weekend in Peekskill’s beautiful Riverfront Green Park. While at the park, jump on a few carnival rides, grab some delicious fair food, and don’t forget to stop and take a peek at the leaves beginning to change on the trees along the Hudson River. Proceeds from the event will go to benefit Peekskill Celebration and the Peekskill Lions Club.

Where/When: Commerce Street and Veterans Road, Sunday, Oct. 9 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why go: More than 15,000 people came to last year's fair and this one is expected to attract just as many people. There will be live music and entertainment, food and craft vendors, games, face painting, demonstrations, stilt walkers and various interactive vendor booths. New this year includes a car racing track, Elvis impersonator, and more. Dave Paganelli of Travelers Rest will provide free food. Desserts will be provided by many of the local establishments including The Field Home, Jesse's Deli, ShopRite and Wilkens Tree and Fruit Farm.

Turtle Trails: Learn about how turtles prepare for the winter weather

Where/When: Teatown Lake Reservation, Ossining; Saturday, Oct. 8, 1-2:30pm

Why go: Last week Teatown bid farewell to the area’s feathered friends as they flew off to warmer skies; this week you are invited to learn about what turtles do to survive the north east’s temperatures as the days begin to get increasingly colder. Join Teatown’s turtle expert, Erin, as she teaches you about how our slow moving friends prepare to brave the New York winter.

Columbus Day Harvest Fair: Rides, food, and fun by the lake

Where/When: ,  Jefferson Valley; Sunday, Oct. 9, 11am-4pm

Why go: This fair has got it all- the best of summer with rides and games, as well as fall favorites like hayrides and hot cider. Spend the day on lakeside enjoying rides, games, laser tag, pony rides and much more. There will also be free entertainment featuring C.R. Friends Costume Characters. While at Osceola, paint a pumpkin to take home and even grab a kayak or paddle boat and take a ride out onto the lake.

Bear Mountain Oktoberfest: Authentic German food and beer at Bear Mountain State Park

When/Where: 55 Hessian Drive, Bear Mountain; Saturday, Oct. 8 & Sunday, Oct. 9, noon-6pm

Why Go: Celebrate this annual local favorite Oktoberfest with some authentic German food and beer. Along with the ales and schnitzel this event will also feature live entertainment and arts and crafts. While at the park you can take a relaxing boat ride around Hessian Lake, enjoy a stroll throughout the state park, or take the kids on the Merry Go Round. This is a rain or shine event.

Sounds Good: Old-Time Music Jam Sessions

Where/When: Hilltop Hannover Farm (building A), Yorktown Heights; Friday, Oct. 7, 6:30-9:30pm

Why go: Something Good in the World, Inc. teams up with Hilltop Hannover Farm to bring you a night of music and healthy eating. Bring your own instrument and join the music makers or just enjoy the sounds of others. Please bring a healthy potluck dinner to share with those in attendance.

The Great Jack O’ Lantern Blaze: 4,000 jack-o-lanterns light up Van Cortlandtville Manor

Where/When:  Van Cortlandt Manor, Croton-on-Hudson, Fri. Oct. 7, Sun. Oct. 9, & Mon. Oct. 10 (Saturday SOLD OUT) Tours from 6:30-9:30pm

Why go: As part of one of the largest, most talked about Halloween events in the entire Hudson Valley, historic Van Cortlandtville Manor becomes home to 4,000 carved jack o’ lanterns. Wander through the grounds and prepare to be amazed, (and maybe even a little bit frightened). Tours go from 6:30-9:30 each evening. This is a rain or shine and admission is by advance timed ticket only. The event runs until early Nov., but tickets sell out fast, so don’t delay!

Pricing: $16, $12 ages 5-7, free ages 4 and under weekdays and Sunday. $20, $16 ages 5-7, free ages 4 and under Saturdays

Saturday Crafts at the Field: Children’s arts and crafts at the Peekskill Field Library

Where/WhenPeekskill Field Library, Peekskill; Saturday, Oct. 8, 11am-noon

Why go: Grab the glitter and glue sticks because it’s time to get creative at Peekskill’s Field Library. Join staff and other families for fun times and craft projects. The program is suited for children ages 3 and up, with older children welcome as well. All kids should bring an adult to help with their crafting.

Scared By the Sound: A fearfully fun night at Rye Playland

Where/When: Rye Playland, Rye; Fri. Oct. 7, Sat. Oct. 8 & Sun. Oct. 9, Fri. 8-11pm, Sat. 7-11pm, Sun. 7-10pm

Why go: If you like hanging out with zombies, ghouls, ghosts, and maniacs Rye Playland’s Scared by the Sound is the place to be. While at the temporarily haunted amusement park visit a spooky wine cellar, library, sanitarium, waterfront cemetery in the sand and the mausoleum…and be afraid, be very afraid.

Orange Splot Art Spot: A Grand Opening Event for young artists

Where/When: 1009 Park St, Peekskill; Friday, Oct. 7 & Sunday, Oct. 9

Why go: Orange Splot Art Spot is a new hands-on non-traditional art workshop for babies, children, and their families. To help celebrate their grand opening, Orange Splot is inviting you to come check out what the fun is all about during their week-long free drop-in sessions, going on Monday, Oct. 3 - Friday, Oct. 7, from 9:30-11:30am and 3-5pm. During the drop-in sessions everyone from toddlers to teens can enjoy crafting projects in an educational, eco-conscious environment, while parents learn more about Orange Splot’s After School Art Labs and Art Camps. On Sunday from 11am-1pm, swing by for the Splot’s official Family Fun Kick-off Party which will be hosted at the beginning of each semester for those interested in learning more about The Orange Splot Art Spot can come to ask questions, take a look, or just enjoy some creative time.

Yakety Yak: A book discussion group for 2nd graders

Where/When: Hendrick Hudson Free Library, Montrose; Friday, Oct. 7, 9am

Why go: Bring your child to the Hendrick Hudson Library where he/she can join other 2nd graders to discuss the book "Martha Takes the Case" by Susan Meddaugh. While at the library, children are welcome to enjoy a snack. This event is for age appropriate children only, and registration is required. Children will also get a free copy of the book. Registration also begins on this day for the next session of Yakety Yak, which will focus its discussion the book "Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street." This session will be for 2nd and 3rd graders.
