PLAINVIEW, NY — Tiny tenants have moved into the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, but their stay won't last long.

This group of caterpillars, now nestled in the library's Family Center, will give children and families a chance to observe nature firsthand. Community members can watch the critters grow, either in person or via the caterpillar livestream.

The caterpillars were obtained through an educational supplier specifically for classroom and library programs, the library said. Family Center Librarian Alyssa Schneyman said they are thrilled to welcome back hungry caterpillars yet again.

"This is our second year hosting these amazing little creatures," she said. "We can't wait to watch them change into butterflies."

Designed to teach children about metamorphosis, pollinators, and environmental stewardship, the library hopes programs such as this one can inspire young learners. The library is also planning to host ladybugs later this summer, offering another opportunity for children to learn about beneficial insects and their roles in the environment.

Folks can follow the caterpillars' progress, find updates, and learn about the future butterfly release on the library's social platforms.
