BETHPAGE, NY — A sex offender was caught at a probation office with a cell phone believed to be "used for sexual purposes," police said.
According to the Nassau County Police Department's special victims squad, Steven Klauer, 26, of Bethpage, was arrested on Tuesday at 6:30 a.m.
Detectives said that on Tuesday, July 7, Klauer responded to the Nassau County probation office, located in Mineola, as required for being registered as a Level 1 sex offender. During the visit, probation officers recovered a phone belonging to Klauer that was believed to be used for sexual purposes, police said.
An extensive and thorough investigation was conducted with the assistance of the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force that resulted in Klauer being arrested on Tuesday at his residence without incident, police said.
Klauer was charged with four counts of first-degree disseminating indecent material to minors; six counts of second-degree disseminating indecent material to minors; four counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child less than 17 years of age; and four counts of possessing sexual performance by a child less than 16 years of age, police said.
He was slated to be arraigned on Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
