Join us on Sunday, May 3 from 10am–4pm at the Mid-Island Y JCC (45 Manetto Hill Rd, Plainview) for a full day of entertainment, activities, and local shopping.

Celebrate Lag B’Omer with an evening of family-friendly fun at the Mid-Island Y JCC in Plainview. On Monday, May 4, 2026, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, families are invited to come together for a lively outdoor experience filled with hands-on activities, creativity, and connection.
This engaging event features a variety of interactive stations designed for children and families to enjoy together. Highlights include Story Time with Rabbi Bennet, a Build-a-Bonfire craft, a friendship bracelet station, and a family planting activity. Guests can also take part in a unique “Wrap a Baked Potato” station, relax in the picnic snack area, and enjoy games like the inflatable dart board.

This free, family-friendly event is open to all Plainview-Old Bethpage (POB) residents and will once again offer an up-close look at the heavy-duty vehicles and specialized equipment used to maintain and improve the District’s essential drinking water infrastructure, along with fun giveaways for children in attendance.

Get creative this spring at the Mid-Island Y JCC with a hands-on Fused Glass Mini Lantern workshop designed for beginners.
Starting Tuesday, May 12, this two-session class (May 12 &amp; May 19, 6:30–8:30 p.m.) introduces participants to the art of fused glass. Guided by artist Kelly Schulte-Smith, attendees will learn how glass transforms when fired at high temperatures in a kiln while creating their own decorative mini lantern.
All materials are included, and no prior experience is needed. Finished projects will be available for pickup at a later date after kiln firing.
The program is open to adults 18 and older. Cost is $110 for non-members, with a discounted rate of $95 for members.

Girl Scouts Robotics Classes Program

When I first started to teach robotics to elementary school students, I noticed that they were not sure of their abilities and were not comfortable when it came to STEM education. I decided to organize and teach robotics classes to these students to make STEM education accessible to everyone. From the beginning, the program emphasized interactive and hands-on activities rather than traditional teaching methods. I worked with about 15 participants over a period of weeks, helping them design and program simple robots. This allowed them to explore engineering concepts in a creative and engaging way. One of the most rewarding aspects was seeing their confidence grow. At first, they were unsure of their capabilities to learn the material, especially since they had no prior knowledge of it. Yet, as they worked on projects and overcame obstacles, they began taking ownership of their work, working together with others, and taking pride in what they had accomplished. This was not without its own set of challenges, however. It demanded a high level of organization to ensure that robot kits, materials, and schedules were managed effectively. In addition, there was a need to ensure that the content was accessible to a variety of experience levels. Through this process, I was able to develop leadership skills such as communication, flexibility, and mentoring. Working with mentors and administrators at Bethpage High School Robotics helped create a plan for the program’s sustainability. This experience showed me the power of hands-on learning and inspired me to continue creating opportunities for younger students to explore STEM and develop a passion for innovation.

We’re Dragonfly Cares, a group of providers offering Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Speech-Language Therapy across Long Island. Our goal is to support children as well as the caregivers around them, while emphasizing community engagement and transparency. Our goal from the start has been to create a supportive network and uplifting environment for the families and therapists we work with. No more one-size fits all models, we provide more and always will. Each group is led by a BCBA and includes 1:1 support from a trained behavior technician. Groups are thoughtfully formed based on each child’s individual needs and skill sets.
