The National Institutes of Health recently announced new funding opportunities to develop ways to engage researchers from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical sciences. “There is a compelling need to promote diversity in the biomedical research workforce,” said Francis Collins, MD, PhD, director of the institutes.
The North Shore-LIJ Health System has been fostering diversity in medical research and health care for years by offering regular programs and events. In fact, North Shore-LIJ placed in the DiversityInc Top 10 Hospital Systems for 2013. This fall, our Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Literacy sponsored the seminar Partners In Health Care: Everyone Plays a Role. As she addressed attendees, Betty Diamond, MD, head of the Center for Autoimmune and Musculoskeletal Diseases, said, “It has been shown that having a diverse workforce in the area of research expands the arena of discovery science.”
