Torah Lishma Tuesdays at Temple Chaverim

Study with the clergy of Temple Chaverim every Tuesday night at Temple Chaverim, 7:30pm to 9:00pm: TORAH LISHMA (“Torah For Its Own Sake”).

Each week is a self-contained lesson, so you can join any week. Some classes focus on the holidays, some on rituals, some are movies and discussion.

In the first series of classes, Rabbi Hecht has been taking an in-depth look at some stories from the Bible. We have already examined:

  • issues about the Biblical warning against Fundamentalism in the expulsion from the Garden of Eden story,
  • the idea of the apocalypse in the story of Noah and in the vision of Isaiah and Ezekiel,
  • the issue of power and control over others in the story of Abraham, and
  • the question of whether religion calls for obedience or ethics and what happens when they come into conflict.

On November 1st, Rabbi Hecht will look at the role that emotion plays in our lives by examining the story of Jacob and Esau. On November 8th, we will examine the story of Joseph and see what role dream fulfillment plays in his story and in God's world.

Beginning on November 15th, Cantor Bradley Hyman will begin a series that we’re calling "Why we DO that?" In this engaging and innovative class, we’ll examine why we say different prayers and how we say them (standing, sitting, bowing, pointing, etc.)

Come LEARN and GROW at Temple Chaverim!
