Judy Jacobs Parkway Elementary School Learns Fire Safety

Plainview, N.Y. – The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s Judy Jacobs Parkway Elementary School recently received a visit from the Plainview Fire Department to share with students crucial fire safety tips and demonstrate what it is like to be a firefighter. Plainview firefighters actively participated with more than 300 students in grades K-2. The first responders instructed the children on how to distinguish fires, respond suitably–including stop, drop and roll techniques–and even provided extensive tours of fire trucks.

The first responders, dressed in their protective gear, provided the students with a chance to discover the complexity of fire safety equipment and learn its essential importance in combating fires. Along with guiding students on fire safety, the volunteers of the Plainview Fire Department articulated to enthused students about their professions and how the students, when they are older, could someday give back to the community they live in by volunteering as firefighters.

As a part of Fire Prevention Week, the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District hosts this event annually in an effort to engage students with the community and educate them on the importance of community service and volunteerism. Educational events such as these are a tremendous part of the District’s ongoing initiative to expose students to various career paths and provide outlets for students to grow.
