'What Happened to Justice?'

A conversation with Bill Keller, editor-in-chief of The Marshall Project and former executive editor of The New York Times, highlights the Fair Media Council’s Connection Day on Oct. 21, 2016.

A media summit and innovation lab to help organizations better market themselves, FMC’s Connection Day is the largest conference in the country to bring the news media and community together for a day of open dialogue, mutual understanding, relationship building and story pitching. Businesses and nonprofit of all sizes are urged to attend.

Before heading up the nonprofit journalism start-up that is The Marshall Project, Keller worked for The New York Times from 1984 to 2014 as a correspondent, editor, and op-ed columnist. As a correspondent, he covered the collapse of the Soviet Union, winning a Pulitzer Prize, and the end of white rule in South Africa. FMC Connection Day features a morning media summit to give businesses and community organizations the opportunity to meet, network and pitch the news media from the greater New York metro area. Breakout sessions throughout the day feature accomplished speakers and trainers on a variety of communication and branding topics. The day is devoted to providing organizations with the knowledge, skills and tools to get their messages out efficiently and effectively.

Participants attending the event choose to attend five breakout sessions out of 20 offerings, enjoy a breakfast panel discussion, 'Election 2016: Incredibly Bizarre, Extremely Close,' moderated by WCBS Newsradio 880 News & Programming Director Tim Scheld; networking breaks that include puppy therapy and exhibitors representing businesses, nonprofits and media.

One breakout session, 'Cyberbullying, Upclose & Personal: The Tyler Clementi Story,' will be told by his brother, James Clementi, and offer insight into what parents, teachers and elected officials need to know about protecting our youth from cyberbullying today.

'How to Beat the Press: Get Media Training' is a breakout designed for CEOs to prepare for media interviews. 'Secrets from a Bestselling Author' features New York Times' bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize nominee Tom Clavin giving storytelling and brand building advice. 'Inside the Newsroom,' 'Reporter Roundtable,' 'Meet & Pitch the Media' are sessions designed to take participants behind the scenes of the news media, to understand how news decisions are made, what's coming up in the news -- and how to be in the news. Many more timely and interesting panel discussions and presentations happen throughout the day.
