PLAINVIEW, NY — A pair of area elementary schools are ranked among the best in the country in the new list by U.S. News & World Report.

The Old Bethpage School is ranked number 1 on Long Island and 8th in New York, while the Judy Jacobs Parkway Elementary School in Plainview is ranked 2nd on Long Island and 9th across the state.

Other neighboring schools making the grade:

• Village Elementary School in Syosset is number 5 on Long Island and 15th in New York
• George A. Jackson School in Jericho is 8th-best on Long Island (31st in NY)

Among the top middle schools in the state:

• Jericho Middle School tied for tops on Long Island and tied for 14th in NY
• H.B. Mattlin Middle School in Plainview is 6th on Long Island (24th in NY)
• H.B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset is 9th-best on Long Island (39th in NY)
• South Woods Middle School in Syosset is ranked 10th on Long Island (40th in NY)

The news outlet based its 2024 Best Elementary and Middle School rankings on publicly available data from the U.S. Department of Education, focusing on student proficiency in core subject areas.

U.S. News looked closely at state assessments of students who were proficient or above-proficient in mathematics and reading/language arts, while also accounting for student backgrounds, achievement in core subjects and how well schools are educating their students. Student-teacher ratios are applied to break ties in the overall score.
