Pasadena First Graders Celebrate Differences Through Art

"Patchwork Elephant" parade showcases individuality in school.

Plainview's Pasadena Elementary first graders recently learned a lesson about celebrating their differences through a unique art project.

Pasadena art teacher Carla Loeven based the lesson on Elmer, the Patchwork Elephant, by David McKee. Loeven read the book to her first graders and then discussed the story’s themes of respecting each other’s differences.

The students then drew and decorated their own patchwork elephants with a vibrant array of shapes and patterns. Once the project is completed the students will lead their creations in a parade around the school.
