Plainview Elementary Schools to Open Wednesday

Superintendent Lorna Lewis has announced that Plainview will have a regular day of school for all its students on Wednesday.

While its secondary schools opened Tuesday, the district's elementary schools remained closed, awaiting power restoration. The district has missed six days of instruction following the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Now, Parkway Elementary School is the the lone school without power. The district is coming up with a contingency plan to house Parkway students in Mattlin Middle School if power is not restored there Tuesday.

For safety reasons, all after-school activities must end before dark for the remainder of the week, Lewis said. The exception will be Plainview JFK playoff games.

"This past week has presented all of us with unprecedented challenges and I appreciate your understanding as we work to open our schools," Lewis said.

More than alone remain without power on Tuesday, eight days after the devastating storm struck Long Island. That figure has not changed significantly since the weekend, LIPA's records show.

"Many of our families and staff are still without light and heat and are trying to cope with a more than difficult situation," Lewis said. "We extend our sympathy to them and hope that power is restored to their homes swiftly."
