PLAINVIEW STUDENT IS MWI ESSAY CONTEST WINNER

Aashi Mehta, a 5th grader at H.B. Mattlin Middle School, won second prize in the second annual “Making a Difference” essay contest sponsored by Meadowbrook Women’s Initiative (MWI). This year’s topic was “making my community a better place.” The contest was open to 4th and 5th graders in all Nassau County school districts; Aashi’s winning essay was chosen from more than 350 entries.

In her essay, Aashi said that the reason her community is a “safe and friendly place” is because of the elderly, “and it’s time to give back. They need to feel loved, and kids can help do that.” She told how students from her school go to the Atria senior residence. “We play games, do activities, and interact with our ‘Grandpal’, who is a senior citizen that doesn’t have grandchildren or children that live near them. The goal is to make them feel like they have their own grandchildren. According to the club advisor, Mrs. Zacharias, ‘the senior citizens truly felt that they have grandchildren.’

“Being healthy doesn’t just mean being in good shape. Research says that being happy is a major part of keeping healthy. When kids visit the elderly and make them laugh, it makes them happy.

“In return, it’s an enriching experience for kids. They learn to not be selfish. It helps us understand the value of life.

Many times the elderly are along and all they want is our attention and to know that they are loved. I think more schools should set up clubs like this.”

Robbie Vitale, a 4th grader at Seaford Manor Elementary School, in Seaford, won first prize. Jenna Halpin (5th grade, Locust Valley Intermediate School) and Christopher Sais (4th grade, Lee Avenue Elementary School, Hicksville) tied for third. Award presentations were made at each school.

MWI (www.meadowbrookwomen.org), with more than 500 members on Long Island, is dedicated to promoting lifelong learning, serving the community and raising funds for worthwhile local causes, including Hofstra University’s Medical School.
