POBMS Students are Hungry for Reading

Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School Hosts Literacy Café

Plainview, N.Y.—Students at Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School (POBMS) in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District are hungry for literature! POBMS hosted its first ever Literacy Cafe for students. The weeklong event, which took place during the week of January 27-January 31, was created with the mission of encouraging 5th and 6th graders to explore new books through genres, styles and authors.

The zSpace Lab located in POBMS was decorated as a café including details such as place settings and menus. Each table was organized by book genre. After reading a few pages of each book, students were asked to write down their thoughts.

“The goal of the Literacy Café was for students at Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School to gain the experience of branching out and discovering new reading material,” said Dr. Alice Bowman, Principal at POBMS. “We look forward to hosting more events similar to the Literacy Café that urge students to step out of their comfort zone.”
