Fellow POB Residents,

My name is Rebecca Davis and I am running for an open seat on the Plainview-Old Bethpage Board of Education. My husband Darren and I moved to Plainview over 10 years ago to raise our two wonderful boys – Aidan, a freshman at POB JFK High School and Cooper, an 8th grader at H.B. Mattlin Middle School.

A great number of discussions in our home tend to focus on being an active part of the collective solution. We talk a lot about finding ways to make a positive impact in our community, and actively meet any challenges we face by staying informed and being involved. Crossing paths and making connections with our friends and neighbors allows us a common means of encouraging every person’s ideas, beliefs, misgivings, giving and sharing. It’s a medium in which we strive towards the betterment of ourselves and each other. You are the sum of the people around you.

Right now two important discussions that we immediately need to continue are how to keep our children safe at school, physically and emotionally. It means working closely with New York State and finding funds to implement critical school safety measures and infrastructure investments along with a larger focus on mental health and stress management. It is critical for our students’ safety and mental well-being. I promise I will prioritize these two issues if humbly elected to serve.

As my children continue their education here in Plainview-Old Bethpage, I remain actively involved. The knowledge and experience I have gained through the years has been immeasurable. I am fluent and current on BOE policies, having attended and spoken at countless Board meetings, events with Local and State Government Officials/NYS education officials, school events and workshops. I believe I possess a specific knowledge of what would benefit our District, and what will be necessary moving forward to enable us to give our children the best opportunities available. Most of all, I feel privileged to be able to stand beside my children - and yours – as they continue their journey, and as the District evolves.

As a member of the School Board I promise to listen first, lead thoughtfully and respectfully and more importantly, continue to build strong partnerships with parents, administrators, students and teachers to work towards the common goal of providing our children the best available opportunities to grow and learn in a fiscally responsible and transparent manner.

I truly believe the primary role of a School Board is not to run the schools, but to ensure that the schools are run well.

I humbly ask for your vote on May 21, 2019. Polls are open from 6am-9pm at Jamaica Avenue School and in the Administrative Offices at H.B. Mattlin Middle School.
