Installing Smoke Alarms in Port Chester: American Red Cross Volunteers

The event Saturday was part of a #LovedOnesSafe campaign focused on focused on family home fire preparedness.

PORT CHESTER, NY — American Red Cross volunteers including the Board of the American Cross in Metro New York North and other community partners met in Port Chester Saturday to install free smoke alarms for village residents in places where there have been home fires.

The weekend’s installations were part of a larger effort by the Red Cross to install 45,000 smoke alarms during the month of October in homes across the country through its 5-year national Home Fire Campaign.

In addition to the installations, the campaign focuses on home fire preparedness initiatives that families can take to keep their #LovedOnesSafe.

Smoke alarms cut the risk of death from a home fire in half.

The multi-year campaign kicked off in October of 2014 with a goal to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent during the five years of the campaign.
