PORT CHESTER, NY — A Port Chester police officer was lucky to escape serious injury this morning when the driver of a stolen car, desperate to escape, reversed from a roadblock, dragging the officer before speeding away.

The scary incident started around 11 a.m. Friday, when Port Chester Police Department traffic unit patrol attempted to stop a BMW with temporary license plates for traffic infractions on Boston Post Road. Rather than stopping, the car reportedly made a u-turn and fled South on Route 1.

When the officer approached the car, the driver accelerated in reverse in an attempt to back away, police said. As the car backed up, the officer was dragged between the BMW and the truck.

"Luckily, our officer was able to break free and not sustain serious injuries, he did however suffer some minor injuries," the Port Chester Police Department said in a statement released on social media Friday night. "Unfortunately, the driver who had no regard for anyone's safety then sped away and onto 95 southbound."

Police officials confirmed to Patch that the officer involved is doing okay, following the harrowing experience.

Authorities said they are still trying to locate the stolen car and driver involved in this morning's near tragedy. The temporary plate on the car was found to have been fraudulent and the silver BMW was reported stolen from New York City, according to police.

"We would like to commend our officer for his actions today as this situation could have turned out much worse," police said. "We also would like to thank the rolloff driver's as well as numerous witnesses who have called expressing concern for our officer."

Anyone with any information about the driver or the location of the silver BMW is asked to call 914-939-6332. Police officials said they are tracking down all possible leads in an attempt to find the driver responsible.
