From the Westchester County Office of Emergency Management: WCOEM continues to monitor Tropical Storm Henri (pronounced ahn-REE) in the western Atlantic. The Westchester County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will be staffed on Saturday (0700-1900) and Sunday (0700-1900). Additional EOC coverage may be added based on updated forecasts and actual conditions. “Tropical Storm Henri is currently 555 miles south of Montauk Point and will likely track north-northeast across Long Island as a category 1 hurricane Sunday, and then track into southern New England and upstate New York later Sunday into Monday. (NWS)” Update from the National Hurricane Center: “At 800 AM EDT (1200 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Henri was located near latitude 33.6 North, longitude 72.7 West. Henri is moving toward the north-northeast near 12 mph (19 km/h). A northward to north-northeastward motion is expected today, with a turn toward the north-northwest expected by tonight. On the forecast track, Henri is expected to make landfall in Long Island or southern New England on Sunday… Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher gusts. Strengthening is forecast through tonight, and Henri is expected to become a hurricane later today and be at or near hurricane strength when it makes landfall in Long Island or southern New England… Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) from the center.” Update from the National Weather Service (05:45): “Strong winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding expected late Saturday into Sunday as Henri approaches and moves through the area. - Winds will be out of the East 10 to 15 mph.
- Outer rain bands from Henri may begin to move into the area in the evening.
Forecast for Sunday (NYC)
- The latest NHC track passes the storm about 70 miles to the east of NYC as a Category 1 Hurricane early Sunday afternoon.
- Henri is expected to make landfall around 2:00 PM Sunday in Suffolk County and continue northward into Connecticut.
- Periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms will develop during the overnight and may continue through early Monday morning.
- Severe storms are not expected in the NYC area at this time, however flash flooding will be possible late tonight through late Sunday.
- Total precipitation amounts of 3.0 to 6.0 inches with locally higher amounts possible.
- The period of strongest winds will be from early Sunday morning through early Monday morning with speeds of 25 to 30 mph and gusts of 50 mph.
- The likelihood of tropical storm force winds mph is between 70 and 80 percent during this time.
- The potential for coastal flooding will increase Sunday morning as Henri begins to make its approach, particularly in the Long Island Sound.
- A reasonable worst case of 3.0 to 5.0 feet of above-ground inundation will be possible in vulnerable shoreline locations
- Urban flooding in low lying and poorly drainage areas is expected during periods of heavy rainfall.
- Flash flooding will be possible late Saturday through late Sunday.
- Conditions are not favorable for tornadoes.
- Forecast confidence is moderate for the predicted conditions.
The following products have been issued for southern Westchester County: Sound Shore, Yonkers and Hastings-on-Hudson; the Storm Surge Watch is now a Storm Surge Warning. A Flash Flood Watch has been issued.
