PORT JEFFERSON, NY — Northwell's Mather Hospital has been awarded multiple prestigious American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines achievement awards for its commitment to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines in treating heart disease, officials said.
The accolades include the Get With The Guidelines – Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Receiving Center Gold and Get With The Guidelines – Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI Gold awards, both with the added distinction of the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.
The recognition underscores the hospital's dedication to saving lives, supporting recovery, and reducing hospital readmissions.
Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, according to the American Heart Association's 2026 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Report, and studies show patients can experience better outcomes when care teams consistently follow evidence-based treatment guidelines.
Recognition as a STEMI Receiving Center and NSTEMI-awarded hospital highlights that Mather provides around-the-clock support for patients experiencing these cardiac conditions.
Mather Hospital also received the American Heart Association's Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award.
Target: Type 2 Diabetes aims to ensure patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to heart attack.
Mather Hospital has also received the American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline Regional Recognition award for its regional collaboration, regarding the care for those experiencing the most severe heart attacks.
The Mission: Lifeline Regional achievement award is earned by hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to work with their referring and receiving hospital partners, as well as Emergency Medical Services, to establish a system of care based on the most up-to-date research-based guidelines, as outlined by the American Heart Association.
Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest science-backed guidelines.
As a participant in the Get With The Guidelines programs, Mather Hospital qualified for the awards by demonstrating a sustained commitment to improving the quality of cardiovascular care.
Dr. John Catanzaro, chairman of cardiology at the hospital, said it "is committed to delivering high-quality care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines and streamlining processes to ensure timely, appropriate care for heart attacks."

Dr. Karen E. Joynt Maddox, chair of the American Heart Association Quality Oversight Committee, said that the awards "reflect Mather Hospital's commitment to caring for people in their community who need cardiovascular care."
