Comsewogue School District Starts the School Year “STRONG”

The Comsewogue School District kicked off the new school year by engaging in a series of community building and transitional activities on their first two days of school. This district spends these days focusing entirely on social-emotional learning to help students adjust after the summer and lay the groundwork for the rest of the school year.

“The first two days of school are always devoted to team-building activities to instill confidence and pride in our students,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Quinn. “These activities and lessons have helped tremendously with the transition from summer and helped our students become excited and ready for a new school year. By reading STRONG, we aim to inspire everyone in the District to harness their inner strength and work together to make Comsewogue a warm and healthy community.

All staff and students began the year by reading STRONG: Building a Healthy Body and Mind by Comsewogue High School senior and 2024 Miss Long Island Teen Alexis Ebanks. Dr. Quinn greeted students at all the District’s schools and read the book aloud to students in each building. The letters in STRONG represent strength, teamwork, resilience, optimism, nutrition and growth. The story serves to help children connect mental wellbeing with physical health to live a balanced life.

Teachers at all schools led team-building activities for students to get to know each other and bring together their diverse talents to reach common goals. One of the activities engaged in during these first two days of school involved students writing personal fun facts on paper chain links and connecting them all together to form a giant paper chain. Other activities included word games, puzzles, and scavenger hunts to familiarize students with their school grounds. Students also used chalk to write words of encouragement on the pavement outside their school.
