Comsewogue Students Learn About Community Policing During Special Visit

Students at Boyle Road Elementary School in the Comsewogue School District recently welcomed a special guest from the Suffolk County Police Department. Officer Vincent Maio, a Community Liaison Officer for the department’s Fifth Precinct, visited the school to speak with students about his role in law enforcement and community service.

Community Liaison and Community Oriented Police Engagement (COPE) officers are assigned to each of Suffolk County’s seven precincts and serve as a vital bridge between the police department and the communities they serve. These officers work closely with residents, advocacy groups, business owners, school officials and other governmental agencies to strengthen community relationships and help identify and address local concerns.

During his visit, Officer Maio shared insights into his daily responsibilities and explained how he builds positive connections within the community. Students eagerly asked questions about his experiences, the challenges he faces in his work and how he approaches problem-solving as a police officer.

“This visit gave our students a meaningful opportunity to learn about community policing and the important role officers play in our lives,” said Boyle Road Elementary School Principal Dr. Nicole Sooknanan. “Officer Maio did a wonderful job engaging our students and helping them understand how police officers work collaboratively to support and protect our community.”

The visit concluded with an exciting highlight as students were given the chance to get an up-close look at Officer Maio’s patrol car, making the experience both educational and memorable.
