Edna Louise Spear Elementary School First Graders Explore Careers During Community Day

First-grade students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School recently participated in an engaging and educational Community Day, designed to help students understand the connection between their daily lives and the many individuals who contribute to the vibrant Port Jefferson community.

The overall objective of Community Day was to introduce students to a variety of professions and demonstrate how these careers enrich and support the lives of community members. Through six interactive presentations led by parent volunteers, students gained firsthand insight into different occupations, the responsibilities associated with each role, and the specialized tools and skills required for success.

During this unique learning experience, students learned about careers as neuroscientists, police officers, real estate developers, gas turbine control technicians, faith leaders, and investigators with the New York State Justice Center. Each presenter shared valuable information about their profession and answered students’ questions, helping to spark curiosity and broaden their understanding of the many ways people serve their communities.
