Suffolk Man Struck, Killed By Drunken Driver: Cops

The 56-year-old Farmingville resident died at the scene, police say.

CORAM, NY — A 56-year-old Farmingville man was struck and killed by a drunken driver while crossing a road in Coram on Sunday night, Suffolk police said.

Derrick Kindle was driving a 2008 Nissan Sentra eastbound on Middle Country Road, just east of Country Club Drive, when the car struck Gerald Smith, 68, of Farmingville, just before midnight, according to police.

Smith died at the scene, police said, adding that 6th Precinct officers at the scene determined Kindle was "intoxicated and placed him in custody."

Kindle, 30, of Middle Island, was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said. He was held overnight at the 6th Precinct in Selden and scheduled to appear in First District Court in Central Islip on Monday.
