Fire Officials Divert Coram Hazard By Burning Off Propane Gas: Town
The Brookhaven Fire Marshal's office had to use a special torch to burn the gas off safely.

CORAM, NY — Gas from a leaky underground propane tank damaged by a cleaning crew had to be slowly burned off at a property in Coram on Tuesday night, Brookhaven Town officials said.
Coram firefighters responded to the West Dennis Lane home at about 6:30 p.m., and took initial steps to slow the leak, but were unable to stop it, so the town’s fire marshal’s office was called in to help, officials said in a news release.
“When they arrived at the scene and when they assessed the situation, they determined a controlled burn-off of the contents of the tank was appropriate to mitigate the hazard,” officials said.

The town’s propane burn-off torch was brought to the scene, deployed, and then tied to the leaking tank, so that the propane was then ignited through the torch and “safely burned off” at about 11 p.m, officials said.
