Honoring Roderick Cawley

The Port Jefferson School District proudly hosted a heartfelt Wall of Fame induction ceremony to honor the life and legacy of Roderick “Rod” Cawley, a beloved science teacher, legendary coach, and cherished member of the school community.

For more than three decades, Mr. Cawley dedicated himself to the students and athletes of Port Jefferson. As a faculty member, he inspired generations with his passion for science and his unwavering commitment to student growth, both inside and outside the classroom. From 1984 through 2024, he poured his heart into the district’s track and field and cross country programs, becoming widely known as the heart and soul of Port Jefferson athletics.

Coach Cawley led his teams to numerous league and county titles while mentoring countless athletes, including the 2024 cross country team, which won the state championship. Rod was the head coach until 2021, then volunteered until 2024 before he was hospitalized. More importantly, he helped shape character, build confidence, and instill life lessons that his students and runners continue to carry with them today.

The ceremony began with a moving performance of the National Anthem by student Gianna Viviano. Opening remarks were delivered by Superintendent of Schools Jessica Schmettan and Athletic Director Adam Sherrard, who both reflected on Mr. Cawley’s profound impact on the school community.

Track coaches and student-athletes followed with personal reflections, sharing stories that highlighted how Coach Cawley’s influence extended far beyond wins and records. His mentorship and dedication left a lasting imprint on all who had the privilege to know him. The tribute continued with a tree planting and plaque presentation led by science teacher Jon Maletta. The memorial tree was generously donated by the Port Jefferson Runners Club, symbolizing growth, strength, and an enduring legacy.

The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of Mr. Cawley’s commemorative plaque on the Wall of Fame, ensuring that his contributions to Port Jefferson will be remembered for generations to come. Roderick “Rod” Cawley’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever honored.
