Man Gets Into Crash W/ 4 Kids In Car, Possessed Drugs: SCPD

Two of the children were injured when the man crashed into a car on Sunday night, police say.

CORAM, NY — A man was arrested in connection with drug possession after he got into a car crash with four children in the car on Sunday night in Coram, Suffolk police said.

Yonnel Ricketts, 30, of Middle Island, was driving a 2022 Dodge Challenger westbound on Middle Country Road, near the intersection of Country Club Drive, when he veered into the center turning lane and crashed into a 2014 Cadillac SUV driven by a Coram man around 7:35 p.m. Sunday, police said.

The four boys in Ricketts's car were ages 12, 13, 14, and 15, police said. Two suffered minor injuries and were released to a family member at the hospital, police said. The other two were not injured and were released to a family member at the scene, police said.

Ricketts was brought to a hospital to be treated for injuries that are not life-threatening, police said. The Coram man that Ricketts crashed into suffered minor injuries and was brought to a hospital, police said.

Ricketts was charged with one count each of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, first-degree criminal contempt, and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He was also issued numerous summonses for vehicle and traffic violations, police said. He is due to be arraigned at a later date.
