8 High School Football Players From Long Island Suspended After Brawl At Game: Report

Teachers intervened but one Mount Sinai's player kept hitting another player, the school superintendent told Newsday.

MOUNT SINAI, NY — Eight Mount Sinai High School football players have been suspended for taking part in a brawl at the end of Friday night's home game against Bayport-Blue Point, Newsday reported.

Schools superintendent Gordon Brosdal told the outlet that when he saw the tape and he was in disbelief.

"I could not believe that behavior," he said. "We don’t condone that kind of behavior, and we met with the players and coaches and suspended seven student-athletes for one game and there is one player who has a multi-game suspension."

The fight was sparked when a Bayport-Blue Point player tackled Mount Sinai's quarterback near the home team's sideline and was penalized for a late hit, with about 7:43 remaining in the game with Bayport-Blue Point leading 48-6, the outlet reported.

Referees and school chaperones tried to break the fight up, but one of the Mount Sinai players kept punching another player, refusing the referee's orders, Brosdal told Newsday.

"What would happen if that kind of situation happened in my classroom?" he said. "A one-game suspension is nothing for what happened. If it happened in the classroom, it could be months. What message are we sending our student-athletes for the rest of the year if we blow this off? That can’t happen."
