Port Jeff Students Collect Food for Island Harvest's Students Feeding Students Challenge

High school students collect can goods outside Stop & Shop.

Despite the chill in the air, 16 Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Leo Club members stood in front of Stop & Shop in Miller Place on Nov. 2 collecting canned goods for Island Harvest’s Students Feeding Students challenge.

Throughout the day, the Port Jefferson students collected 35 boxes of food and $200. They hope it is enough to retain their title of Suffolk County collection champions.

Last fall, the Leo Club, under the direction of advisers Brian Chalmers and Kristine Vaccaro, collected a few hundred pounds of food, placing them in first place and earning a trophy and visit from a former New York Jets player, who signed autographs. Vaccaro was also invited to appear on Katie Couric’s talk show.
