It seems to me that the the people interested in saving historic buildings and other properties only start to speak out when the chance of demolition or major renovations are on the drawing boards. Don't wait, do it before major decisions such as sales, demos and renovations take place. If you really care, start now before others get the chance to erase history as is being done all over.
