Schafer's Scheduled to Open in July

West Broadway building gutted to make way for new seafood and sushi restaurant.

Work continues on Schafer's, a new restaurant tenitively scheduled to open in July on West Broadway.

According to some of the workers on site working into the late hours of the night on Tuesday, the restaurant's interior has been completely gutted. Mahogany wood is being put up all over and the bar, bathrooms, tables and upstairs area are all being replaced.

The West Broadway building has played host to a number of restaurants in the past, including last year when it was known as .

Workers were there installing electric and there seemed to still be plenty of construction to be done, with saws, wood and equipment scattered throughout the interior.

A passerby on the street asked a worker through an open window to the restaurant when the place would be opened. He was told sometime in July. The buzz on the street was that owner Tom Schafer wanted to open for Memorial Day but the work wasn't able to be completed in time. Shooting for a July 4 opening also seemed a little too ambitious considering the amount of work being put into the opening.

"He's doing it right," said a man at the site who said he was the restaurant manager referring to Schafer who also owns on Main Street in Port Jefferson.

In addition to owning both restaurants, Schafer is the president of the Port Jefferson Business Improvement District.
