MOUNT SINAI, NY — Democratic Suffolk Legis. Sarah Anker has declared victory by 63 votes in the 6th Legislative District, her campaign manager said Monday.

In unofficial results of a recount of ballots released on Monday, Anker, who had begun working on her resume, called it "close to a miracle," the Newsday reported.

On election night, Sweeney led the race with 8,329 votes to Anker's 7,141, and that of Conservative Anthony DiSimone's 1,488.

Anker described herself as "a political anomaly," adding, "Somehow, I've been able to pull through, and the secret is I work very hard in my community."

In a post on Facebook, Sweeney said that he called Anker to concede and congratulated her on her reelection "after a lengthy re-canvassing of ballots to ensure that every vote was counted."

"If anyone ever says that their vote doesn't count, I urge you to refer to this race to show that even one simple vote can make a difference," he said.

"The support I received from all my friends, volunteers, and neighbors in the 6th Legislative District was overwhelming, and I thank you for making this race so close and focused on the issues important to our community," Sweeney continued. "I want to particularly thank Mount Sinai, Miller Place, Rocky Point, Ridge, Terryville, and the Shoreham-Wading River areas as we had overwhelming victories in those communities."

"Regardless of this outcome, I will continue to fight for the things you care about and look forward to 2023 when this seat is next up for election," he added.
