Terryville Sky Blue (Girls U13 soccer) advance to the Eastern New York State Championship Game

Port Jefferson Station area girls youth soccer team will compete for state championship.

It was rainy, cold and dreary day in Terryville on May 13th. Most people found ways to stay inside and hide from the weather, but at Boyle Rd School, amidst the raindrops, a highly anticipated youth soccer game took place. It was the Eastern New York State Semi-finals for the Girls U13 age group with Smithtown and Terryville ready to battle it out for the trip to the title game. The Smithtown Panthers where the defending state cup champions and had beaten Terryville Sky Blue 1-0 just two weeks ago.

After surrendering a goal in 2nd minute of the game, Terryville Sky Blue bounced back to tie the game in the 10th minute. Despite close calls on both sides, the game remained knotted at one entering halftime. Sky Blue took their first lead with a goal in the 39th minute, but the Panthers found a way to tie the game with 12 minutes left in the contest.

As the temperature dropped, the rain hardened, and the skies darkened, overtime would be needed to declare a winner. In the 1st OT, Terryville converted on a scramble in front of the net to jump back in front 3-2. As the 1st OT concluded, Terryville was 10 minutes away from their 1st trip to the finals. The 2nd OT didn't produce many great scoring chances for either side, and when Sky Blue cleared a Smithtown corner kick, the whistle blew ending the a long, wet, hotly-contested match.
