3 Teenage Girls, 2 Others Hurt In LIE Service Road Crash

MELVILLE, NY – Three teenage girls and two others were hospitalized following a crash on a Long Island Expressway service road that left a minivan overturned on its side early Saturday.

Emergency responders reported to the crash involving a minivan and an SUV at the intersection of North Service Road and Round Swamp Road at 12:40 a.m.

According to fire officials, the minivan was found overturned on its side with a man and three teenage girls trapped inside. Melville firefighters and Suffol Police Emergency Service officers used heavy rescue tools to cut into the vehicle and eventually remove the occupants through the front windshield and rear door of the minivan.

The four occupants of the minivan and the driver of the SUV suffered non-life threatening injuries. They were all transported to Winthrop University Hospital and Huntington Hospital by Melville Rescue Squad and Nassau County Police ambulances.

Emergency responders from the Melville and Plainview fire departments, as well as the Suffolk and Nassau police departments all responded to the scene.

About 40 firefighters, rescue personnel and police were on the scene. All units were under the command of Melville Fire Chief Jason Bernfeld and assistant chiefs Chris Nolan and David Kaplan.
