Staff at the Port Washington Children’s Center recently gathered for a dynamic and interactive professional development day focused on strengthening guided reading strategies for toddlers, preschoolers, and Universal Pre-K (UPK) students.
The training highlighted the critical role of early literacy and equipped educators with practical tools to support language development across all age groups. Staff engaged in thoughtful whole-group discussions, exchanging ideas and best practices for fostering a lifelong love of reading in young learners.
To bring these strategies to life, teachers collaborated in small groups to design engaging, developmentally appropriate lesson plans based on books of their choice. Each group created tailored plans for toddler, preschool, and UPK classrooms, then presented their work to colleagues. The experience fostered creativity, collaboration and shared learning among staff members.
Adding to the energy of the day, staff participated in a lively game of “Family Feud” that featured questions based on OCFS regulations, center policies and knowledge of the center. The room was filled with laughter as teams competed enthusiastically, showcasing both their knowledge and strong sense of teamwork.
The training concluded with a focused session on playground supervision, reinforcing the center’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe, supportive environment for all children.
“Our educators are at the heart of everything we do,” said Executive Director Christine Paige, who led the day’s sessions with Program Director JeanLou Supplice and Early Childhood Coordinator Stephanie Petery. “By investing in high-quality professional development, we’re not only strengthening our teaching practices but also ensuring that every child in our care has the foundation they need to thrive.”
The professional development day created a meaningful and engaging experience for all participants. Through ongoing programs like this and a shared commitment to excellence, the Port Washington Children’s Center continues to invest in its staff and ensure high-quality care and education for the children and families it serves.
