MANHASSET, NY — The Town of North Hempstead will honor local military heroes with the unveiling of new 'Hometown Heroes' banners during a special ceremony this week.
This is part of the Hometown Heroes Military Recognition Program, which honors veteran and active-duty service members (living and deceased) with red, white, and blue, 2-feet-by-four-feet commemorative banner featuring their name and rank, branch of service, and a military photo.
The commemorative banners will be unveiled on Friday at 10 a.m. at Mary Jane Davies Green in Manhasset and displayed on light poles at North Hempstead Park facilities from Armed Forces Day through Veterans' Day.
Among those being honored are Lieutenant Junior Grade Brian J. Morris, Jr. of the United States Navy and Private First Class Conner Gould of the United States Army's 82nd Airborne Division. Family members and friends of both servicemen will attend the unveiling ceremony alongside local elected officials and community organizations.
Members of the Lakeville-Manhasset Fire Department and the Manhasset American Legion Auxiliary Unit 304 will also participate in the event. Adding to the patriotic tribute, the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department will display a fire truck with a large raised American flag overlooking the ceremony.
During the event, Supervisor DeSena and family members will unveil four of the new banners, each serving as a visible reminder of the courage, commitment, and service of hometown men and women in uniform.
Armed Forces Day, observed annually on the third Saturday in May, honors Americans currently serving in the United States military, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force. The holiday is celebrated as part of National Military Appreciation Month.
