PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Four people are displaced, and ten first responders were injured after battling a Port Washington house fire on Friday evening, fire marshals said.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office said the Port Washington Fire Department responded to a two-story split-level home on White Oak Drive at 7:44 p.m. on Friday. In a Facebook post, the PWFD said units could see smoke in the distance and transmitted a signal 10 Work Fire before even arriving on scene. There was heavy fire on the first and second floors of the home, PWFD said.

"The fire caused a partial collapse of the second floor and garage," PWFD said.

In the post, PWFD said there were no residents home at the time of the fire and the PWFD "successfully rescued the homeowners' dog."

"A police officer grabbed the dog and took a bit of smoke in the process, but last we knew, the dog was okay," fire marshals said.

With mutual aid assistance, the fire was brought under control in approximately 45 minutes with 80 firefighters on scene, fire marshals said.

There were 10 injuries and medical emergencies – nine firefighters and one police officer were injured, the NCFM's office said. None of the injuries was deemed life-threatening, fire marshals said.

All injured were evaluated and treated by EMS units, fire marshals said. Six firefighters were transported to Manhasset's North Shore University Hospital, fire marshals said. The remaining three firefighters and one police officer were treated at the scene, fire marshals said.

"Two of the firefighters transported to the hospital were for medical emergencies," fire marshals said. "The other 4 were physical injuries from a partial collapse."

Mutual aid assistance was provided by fire departments, including Roslyn, Manhasset-Lakeville, Plandome, Great Neck, and Albertson, and a Deputy County Fire Coordinator from the NCFM's office responded to the scene as well, fire marshals said. All firefighting operations were under the command of Chief Reese of the Port Washington FD, the NCFM's office said.

Four people are displaced due to the fire, and the Town of North Hempstead Building Department was on scene to assess the "severe damage" to the structure, fire marshals said.

The origin and cause of the fire is not considered suspicious, but investigators from the NCFM's office and detectives from the NCPD Arson/Bomb Squad are investigating, fire marshals said.
