84-Year-Old Woman Scammed Out Of $30K, Flushing Man Arrested: PD

Police say the woman thought the security alert was from the Citibank fraud department.

MANORHAVEN, NY — A Flushing man was arrested on Thursday in Manorhaven after he was accused of attempted grand larceny, police said.

Nassau County police said on Sep. 13, an 84-year-old woman received a security alert on her computer, which she thought was the Citibank fraud department.

She called the number and was told to withdraw $30,000, and an FBI agent would meet her, police said. According to police, after she met with a man and gave him the money, she realized she was being scammed and called the police.

She was contacted again to give an additional $18,000 on Sep. 17, police said.

Han Bing Wu, 31, arrived for the retrieval and was placed under arrest – but he was not the same man as the first time, according to police.

Police said Han Bing Wu had what was believed to be ketamine at the time of his arrest.

He was charged with third-degree attempted grand larceny and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, police said. He will be arraigned on Sep. 18 at First District Court in Hempstead, police said.

Police urge people to contact the Nassau County Police Department Sixth Squad at 516-573-6653 if they feel they were scammed.
